160 Storage Ring Quadrupole Magnets for the Synchrotron SOLEIL situated at Saint Aubin near Paris, France
Project start 2003. Project completion 2005.
The Synchrotron SOLEIL is a dedicated high brightness synchrotron light source Saint Aubin in the county of Essonne, 20 km South of Paris, and close to Saclay and Orsay. The accelerator complex includes a 100 MeV LINAC pre-injector, a full energy booster synchrotron and the 2.75 GeV electron storage ring with a 354 m circumference which produces the light dispatched on 24 light beam lines.
This ring is composed of 32 dipole magnets, 160 quadrupole magnets and 120 sextupole magnets attached on girders.
Danfysik successfully delivered the 160 Quadrupole Magnets for the Storage Ring. The Quadrupole Magnets have a “figure of 8” shape. They are of two types, 128 Short Quadrupoles and 32 Long Quadrupoles, with magnetic length 0.32 m and 0.46 m respectively.
The yokes are made with laminations, glued and stacked together along a straight line. The high brightness of SOLEIL requires an electron beam with typical size less than 50 mm. This results in very tight tolerances on the magnets.
